Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is exercise in the water and provides an option for people to work out in a comfortable, social environment with minimal pressure on their bodies.

All ages can benefit and the good news is you don't have to know how to swim!

Hydrotherapy is refreshingly unique making it easy for people to commit to their exercise program.

After all, no-one feels inspired to continue exercise if they find it boring!

Whether you have a chronic back problem, have had joint replacement surgery, recent back surgery or you suffer from an ongoing respiratory condition, hydrotherapy can provide an enjoyable alternative to or complement land-based exercise.

Water buoys the body and by minimising gravitational pull joints can be stretched more easily which is especially valuable for arthritic patients.

Additionally, muscles are given a thorough workout using the water as resistance while water jets add a gentle massage to the experience.

Downs Physiotherapy offers individual hydrotherapy programs with half hour weekly classes throughout the year, only breaking for the Christmas-New Year holiday period.

It has been doing so for more than five years.

Groups meet at Toowoomba's Mylne Bay Aquatic Centre on Thursday afternoons, between 1pm and 3pm.

Classes usually run for four weeks and are small enough to generate some 'healthy' competition and offer an excellent physio/patient ratio.

Participants are encouraged to attend the centre on other days to practise their newly acquired skills.

Often those who were initially afraid of the water grow in confidence with each visit.

Rehabilitation patients, people experiencing neurological problems after a stroke, heart patients, children with balance issues, pregnant women with back pain, lymphoedema sufferers and the elderly, can all benefit from attending hydrotherapy classes.

For many, the classes double as a social outing with some patients opting to attend classes indefinitely.

Comfort is important with any form of exercise and hydrotherapy is no exception.

With a year round water temperature of 34 degrees, patients can relax in the pool and reap the benefits.

A hoist makes light work of safely lifting anyone who may be experiencing difficulties getting in and out of the water.

And, if you are unsteady on your feet, this is the perfect exercise environment with minimal risk of injury if you fall.

Although hydrotherapy patients are usually referred by doctors and other medical specialists, it is possible for you to make a direct appointment to discuss your needs.

Maybe it's time to try a different approach to exercise?
